I would like to present around helping small charities achieve big things. My presentation will walk through how to build a sophisticated individual giving program from scratch and will include helpful and practical takeaways that small charities can put in place, even when operating with small teams, shoe-string budgets and nervous boards. When I started at the Malaghan 2 years ago I was posed with the tasks to increase individual giving. When I started it was quickly apparent there was no focus on Individual Giving, income was low, there was virtually no growth strategy – there was not even a working database.

Since starting I have now launched a successful regular giving program, tripled our annual appeal income, introduced matched giving, launched community fundraising, developed sophisticated automated donor journeys. Our 2022 annual appeal was highly commended in the FINZ awards Best Individual Giving campaign category.
It has not all been sunshine and rainbows. During this time we have had challenges. We have had database implementations, a nervous board that were not used to more direct fundraising. We literally started from the ground up. Building websites, selecting the right marketing platform, and building a digital ecosystem that could be managed by a small team with limited technical knowledge. I want to help others in my position. I want to share the learnings I have found, the challenges faced, the importance of understanding donors and making sure the right foundations are in place.
